Welcome to Monrovia Elementary's Music Classroom! I am so excited to begin making music with your children this year. My goal, in the words of Music Education theorist John Feierabend, is to develop your children into more tuneful, beatful and artful individuals. Not every child will pursue music in a higher degree, but my vision is for your children to never feel ashamed when it comes to his or her musical abilities.
For your children to become tuneful, my goal is for them to feel comfortable singing happy birthday at a party, worshiping publicly in church, or far down the road, singing lullabies to their babies.
As beatful individuals, your children will be able to clap along to a song or a cheer at a football game.
And in becoming more artful, your children will develop an appreciation for all music, with and without words.
I will be combining the Orff-Schulwerk method of music education with John Feierabend's philosophy on how to teach children to read, write and express music. Orff believed in teaching children through the activities they love, which includes chanting, singing, creative movement, keeping a steady beat and playing instruments. Feierabend created a method of teaching music literacy that involves learning by rote first, then stretching the children's brains more and more through decoding then creating. Yes, your child will be able to read music!
